Why USDOT numbers get deactivated
A USDOT number is most commonly deactivated for one of these reasons:
- A missed MCS-150 biennial update — the filing window closed without an update on file
- An FMCSA out-of-service order tied to a safety or compliance issue
- A voluntary deactivation the carrier filed and now needs to reverse
- Unresolved discrepancies in the carrier's record that FMCSA flagged during review
Whatever the cause, a deactivated number means the carrier is not authorized to operate under it — this is a distinct status from simply being overdue on a filing, and requires its own reactivation process.
What reactivation requires
Reactivation is not automatic once a missed filing is corrected. FMCSA generally requires the underlying issue that triggered deactivation to be resolved first — for example, filing the overdue MCS-150 update — and then a reactivation request submitted so the number can be formally restored to active status. If the deactivation was tied to a safety-based out-of-service order, additional requirements from FMCSA's safety division may apply before reactivation is granted.
Filing process

- Record lookup and review. Your existing FMCSA record is retrieved and reviewed to identify what caused the deactivation.
- Resolve outstanding issues. Any overdue filing or outstanding item tied to the deactivation is addressed first.
- Reactivation submission. The reactivation request is filed electronically through Motus, and a confirmation is issued once your number is restored to active status.
How long reactivation takes
Timing depends on why the number was deactivated. A reactivation tied to a straightforward missed biennial update is typically the fastest to resolve once the overdue filing is submitted. Reactivations tied to a safety-based out-of-service order can take longer, since FMCSA's safety division may need to review the case before restoring active status.
